We are doing fine… overall… I think

This is a short post about the status of Romanian free software translations.
According to Wikipedia, Romanian is ranked 40 by an estimation for number of speakers. To estimate the status of Romanian translations, I’m using the translations from Ubuntu 9.10 main repository and Gnome 2.28 .
In Ubuntu Romanian is 30, ranked by the number of completed translations and 17 by the number of contributors, and 50% of the total translations are completed. In GNOME, we have 93% and the only missing translations are Anjuta and Glade (they are developers tools with not to many person using the translated versions).
Those 300 contributors giving us a rank of 17 by contributors but only 30 by actual work done is telling that we succeed in promoting Ubuntu translations and having persons contributing to translations, but we failed to make them a long time contributors. We have only about 10 to 15 active contributors, where the others are past contributors but most of them are drive-by translators.
Still the rank 30 (while we should have been on 40) should be a sign that overall we are doing fine, but we must focus on helping drive-by translators to be more involved in translations.
As a side note, I always admired the Swedish team, they are 78 by number of speakers and 4th by number of amount of completed translations.
They must be all super heroes ![]()
