Dacă anul trecut am lipsit de la FLOSSCamp, voi face tot posibilul pentru a semna condica de prezențe pentru evenimentul FLOSSCamp de anul acesta.
S-au anunțat data - 6-7-8 August 2010 - și locul - aproape de Predeal, pe lângă cabana Poiana secuilor.

Asus WL 500 resurrection

In the last year I was using an Asus WL 500 wifi router and a couple of days ago it just stop working. The LAN and WAN leds were flashing and the power led and wifi were off. From time to time it started to work, but dying after a couple of hours.
I tried upgrading the firmware but with no luck.
After searching the Internet I found a forum thread on the Asus support page and it looks like I am not alone. The forum suggest the problem is from the adapter. After measuring the power adapter output, I did not find anything wrong and the deviation from the 5V, 2A was small. I was a bit disappointed and I forget about the router for a couple of days.
I finally decided to open the power adapter and take a look inside and I found that the capacitor from the exit bridge (the small one) was damaged. After replacing it, the router start working again.
If your Asus WL 500 router is blinking in a strange way you should first try a new power adapter or see if you will need to fix it.

GtkSourceView is a big boy now

Vim is a nice text editor and I’m happy to use it for editing various source code and configuration files on remote servers, but on my desktop I prefer Gedit as I am more comfortable writing plugins in Python.
I have made some customization to QuickOpen and improvements to SessionSaver (waiting to be approved upstream) plugins and together with the wonderful Python checker from GDP Format plugin provided by Curtis Hovey and File Search Mod by Oliver Gerlich, Gedit is turning out to be a nice IDE.
One of my major annoyances with Gedit was Python highlighting as by default it does not highlights trailing spaces, tab indentation or long lines.
After reading GtkSourceView Language Definition tutorial I was able to modify the color scheme and Python language definition to do exactly what it was missing. Here is the result:
The files are on my Launchpad:+junk repository (just look after python:style at the end of the files).

GNOME 2.30 este aici

În data de 31 Martie a fost lansată noua versiune GNOME
Mulțumită efortului depus de echipa GNOME România, ne putem bucura de a traducere completă a interfeței cu utilizatorul și suport oficial în limba Română. Printre persoanele care au participat la localizarea GNOME 2.30 se numără, în ordine alfabetică, Adi Roiban, Claudia Cotună, Cristian Secară, Lucian Grijincu și Mișu Moldovan.
Printre cele mai importante îmbunătățiri pentru utilizatori se numără vizualizarea multiplă din managerul de fișiere Nautilus.
Aceasta este ultima iterație din seria versiunilor GNOME 2, următoarea versiune fiind planificată ca GNOME 3 și în care panourile și managerul de ferestre Gnome vor fi înlocuite cu Gnome-shell.
În Ubuntu 9.10 și Ubuntu 10.04 este inclusă o avampremieră a tehnologiei GNOME-shell și poate fi instalată folosind comanda:
sudo aptitude install gnome-shell
gnome-shell –replace
Propaganda Adobe România

Atenție: Azi e vineri!
Din categoria „haz de necaz”, astăzi am dat peste instrumentul de propagandă corporatistă de la Adobe România.
În general nu îmi plac textele propagandiste însă mai citesc una altă să nu fiu total rupt de ce se întâmplă în lumea asta. Însă în combinație cu lipsa diacriticelor și îmbinarea total neinspirată de română și engleză mi-a fost imposibil să acord atenție conținutului și m-am oprit la un articol trimis de un prieten.
Am rămas surprins să văd că Adobe se mândrește cu faptul că sunt piatra de temelie pentru jocurile Disney și Barbie cât și pentru siteurile cu conținut pornografic.
Să nu o luați în nume de rău. Mă bucur că sunt atât de sinceri și îngrijorați de faptul că utilizatorii Ipad nu se vor putea bucura de tehnologia „FingerTouch porn”

Launchpad Translations Under the Hood

Ubuntu Developers Week is here and I am happy to announce the Launchpad Under the Hood session that will take place in #ubuntu-classroom from irc.freenode.net on Wednesday, 27 Jan 2010, starting 17.OO UTC.
This is a session dedicated mainly to developers wanting to contribute to Launchpad Translations (codename Rosetta) but who are not yet familiar with the internal structure of Rosetta.
We would like to make it an interactive session. If you plan to attend this session please follow the materials from Launchpad Translations Under the Hood session wikipage.
You are also encourage to try installing a Launchpad development on your computer, or use the provided Virtual Box hard disk image.
If you have any question or need help, please don’t hesitate to contact us or find more info on the Launchpad Development Help page.
